Deandre Jordan's SECRET! How To Shoot 81% FREE THROWS

  • Deandre Jordan is a career 44% free throw shooter, so his huge improvement this season to a whopping 81% from the foul line is astonishing. And I’m gonna show you exactly why that is.
WHat up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
There are improvements in both the physical as well as the mental approach to the shooting of Deandre Jordan.
Let’s start with the far more interesting thing. His psychological preparation.
He has a whole routine and It all begins from the moment that he gets fouled. He immediately wants to touch the ball or kinda get a fake shot in the air so that he has a feel for it. He does this every time. Right here, after the whistle, he chases Ingles, but the ref gets the ball first. And you can see him here, Deandre Jordan is fighting with him to touch it.
And just another example before we move on with the routine. As he gets fouled right here, he remembers that he needs to touch the ball, and heads back, gets a feel for it, before he shoots the free throws.
And as he is on the line I noticed something extremely interesting. He is actually trying to get into a rhythm by talking to his teammates before the shot. From what I can tell he is asking them who you got, or who you guard. Referring to defense. And his teammates would point to the player that’s their matchup.
Being there on the line, it’s the most unimportant question that he could ask, especially on the first shot.
So in my opinion this has a sole purpose of relaxing his mind and relieving the pressure.
And again, he does does on every free throw. Asking each teammate in the paint before each of his 2 free throws. And they are obviously in on this. They reply they are always involved. This had to have been a topic of discussion.
But hey it works as he was able to knock down 2 big free throws late in the fourth quarter against the Timberwolves.
The one change in the form if you will, or the physical approach, is the fact that now his left leg is way more in front compared to earlier in his career where he would have it more parallel to the other. My guess is that it serves as a little bit of a guide for a straight line shot.
But, It’s so amusing to see that even big time players that get paid millions of dollars can get mental blocks and need quirky little routines to be able to go through it.
But I love the dedication from Deandre Jordan and I love that it’s finally paying off for him. He’s been working on his free throws for quite a long time, trying to stop the awful Hacking thing , so for his sake, and for us the fans, I’m glad that he is shooting his free throws at a high level.
You know that he has a softer shot when he’s getting favorable bounces like these.
Do I think that Deandre Jordan will be able to keep up this pace? Most likely not, but it sure seems like this is going to be a career best season from the line and it’s not even going to be close.

Left foot in front on the free throw nail. It's on every normal park/gym court.

1:50 When a player's feet are at an angle, with his shoulders are angled, his SHOOTING ARM can be perfectly aimed at the basket.
I used to suck at free throws, so I started practicing them a few hours a week, for months.
I watched how Kobe Bryant lines up his shots. I noticed Kobe would turn his body until his upper arm (the line from his shoulder to his elbow) was aimed right straight down the target line. If he was facing too much to the right, he'd spin in the air until his upper arm lined up, and only then would he release the ball.
His feet were ALWAYS angled on every shot he took, and he shot 83.7% from the line, career.
So I angled my feet just like Kobe Bryant does, and voila! My arm immediately lined up straight. That's when I finally I started hitting free throws (17 in a row was my best back then).

My shot is similar to his, I was a bad shooter when I had my feet parallel and after I put one foot in front of the other I became a really good shooter,

Mavs trained him well with his FT. As a Mavs fan, I like him there. Mavs never really had a dominant center. Too bad they traded him.

He change his rythm, now from the knees to the fingers its just one move, like a wave, before he made 2 stages movement. Before he shot almost just with his wrist he release the ball, now you can tell and is very evident that his movement has become much more fluid. Good for jordan...
