Why Forcing Harden Right Has Been A Disaster For The Jazz

James Harden is an offensive wizard and the king of the stepback 3. He has led the Rockets to a 2-0 lead over the Jazz while attacking a unique defensive strategy. The Jazz are giving Harden a lane and letting him create by finding shooters and throwing lobs to Capela. I analyze why the strategy is not working and contrast it with how the Bucks defended Harden last month. Offense, defense, NBA, playoffs. Warriors.

can you break down the warriors defense when they are playing well vs when it's not right. Maybe using the 2nd game of 1st round vs clippers.

The only reason that Bucks won that infamous game was that everything went wrong for Rockets and everything went right for the Bucks!
Give credit where it's due....they executed the plan close to perfection!

Bucks did the same exact thing the first time they met earlier this season, that game was not nationally televised though. Spoiler alert, they won that game too.

It took the Jazz a while to figure out this defense but in games 3-5 they did much better and it caused those games to be close. The Jazz just didn't have the shooting to go along with the improved defense.

Yeah, I was surprised how static player Harden actually is. He can only finish on left side. But he has done some work with that and last game Harden's offense was much better. He did step-right to free himself up and have a room to shoot. So this defensive tactic won't be the end of him.

They're too loose on him unlike the Bucks did that they really stick to him even if there's a risk for foul trouble as Pippen said.

You know what's probably a better way to defend Harden? Just anticipate his step back. If you know he always fakes a drive before stepping back for a three, anticipate it and step back with him.

he took stepback-3s to the right against the jazz ... the strategy is to prevent stepback-3s to the left, am i right?

I keep wondering why the Harden step-back looks like traveling to my 40+ year-old basketball mind. Maybe because it is? Ever since the league began allowing the 3-step step-back (for only some players!), guys like Harden have become unguardable. If MJ had done that in his day, he'd have been called for traveling ...and if not ...he'd have averaged 40 points a game. I do think the NBA game should evolve as needed, but the 3-step step-back should be officially disallowed. IMO, it's rarely done legally (without traveling), as with the Euro-step, too.

I don't know much about modern basketball. But at 3:56 (thats just one example he does it constantly)Harden charges into the other guy and pushes him away before stepping. This seems like a borderline unbeatable strategy so why don't players constantly charge into the defending player like that? What exactly beats this strategy that Harden constantly uses of pushing other players/charging into them?

When I watched basketball im pretty sure this was illegal...why did they change that? and why aren't other players abusing this same strategy?

Focusing everything on James Harden is a huge mistake. Simple fact - the Bucks got VERY lucky that the rest of the Rockets players went ice-cold. Harden was finding plenty of open looks for assists, but the players he was feeding (Tucker, Gordon, Rivers, etc.) were failing to make their defender-less shots. Had they had any level of success, the Bucks would have been forced to relinquish this very dumb strategy of giving Harden a wide-open run to the basket and pulling in two defenders in the paint to help Bledsoe out. I'm astounded that people actually watched this game and thought that Bledsoe did something positive to affect the outcome. Clearly, the Jazz were certain that lightning would strike twice, but that has proved to be fool's gold. It's not just about positioning like you make it sound at the 2-minute mark, as Bledsoe was getting lost in Harden's 0-60 burst moves routinely. Also, it clearly failed the Bucks in the first quarter, where the Rockets were firing on all cylinders, and were pounding the Bucks into oblivion. After that, scoring efficiency tanked, and the Rockets never regained any semblance of consistency (especially in the 3rd quarter). If they do happen to both make the Finals, and the Bucks try this strategy again, I'm positive it will fail them.

TLDR - It only worked for the Bucks because the rest of the Rockets couldn't put the ball in the hole.

Guys. The point of the defensive strategy the Bucks and now jazz are using is to force the other players to beat you. Everyone keeps saying “it doesn’t work if the players are hitting their shots” duh, no defensive strat works against a team who’s making their shots. The point is to force them to make them. You bank on the lesser talented players being able to beat you and consistently hit shots. When the bucks did it, what happened, the lesser players could hit shots. Stately success. The jazz haven’t 100% bought into it and that’s why they are struggling. They don’t trust themselves. First 2 games harden cooked them. The 3rd game it was working perfectly! Harden was 0-15 through 3 quarters and jazz were actually winning at some points, but, they didn’t follow through and ultimately let the one person who you are keeping from scoring score. Point being. You’re taking harden out the game and counting on the weaker players to beat you. If they do, oh well. You keep the same strategy and you bet that they can’t do it again. If you take away harden the rockets are not that good.
